MY GRANDMA’S SMELLS LIKE ONIONS

My grandma’s smells like onions

She chops them up real small

She warms them in a pan a bit

And rolls the meat into a ball

Grandma rolls some rising dough

And flicks around her wrist

Then lays it on a baking sheet

And bakes up a garlic twist

The spaghetti is al dente

Just like the Old World style

A mountain in the colander

Rises up a mile

When we sit together

My grandma passes ‘round the butter

And says “There’s nothing better

Than eating dinner with one another!”

My grandma’s smells like bacon

She fries it up real nice

She chops some brown potatoes

Adds spice and makes home fries

She throws the bread into the oven

Toasts a whole loaf up at once

So we can sit and eat together

And then no one makes a fuss

She asks us how we want our eggs

Over easy, scrambled, fried

Somehow, you know, our grandma

Makes them all there, side by side

And when we sit together

My grandma passes ‘round the butter

She says “There’s nothing better

Than eating breakfast with each other!”

My grandma’s smells like tuna fish

Watermelon, mac n’ cheese

Cucumbers and carrots

Chicken nuggets, please!

She’s got the fries out of the oven

Pulls them with an oven mitt

She flips them with a spatula

And salts them just a bit

Someone wanted cereal

Someone else a cold hot dog

Someone only wants their milk

Someone else wants spiced eggnog

We all sit down together

Then she asks who needs some butter

Grandma says “There’s nothing better

Than eating lunch with one another!”

My grandma’s smells like roasted turkey

A juicy brown delight

We walk through the door and our noses are warmed

On a chilly autumn night

She made the gravy and the sides

The veggies and the fixings

She made the sweet potato pie

The crescent rolls and biscuits

The room is full of chatter

There is laughter in the air

Grandma is so busy

It seems she’s everywhere

And when we sit together

And grandma passes ‘round the butter

She says “There’s nothing better

Than spending time with one another!”

Grandma’s smells like popcorn

And cookies, candies, cake

She makes it all homemade

She loves to cook and bake

There’s cheese curls and there’s ice cream

There’s chocolate for s’mores

There’s peanut butter crackers

And gummy bears galore

There’s cans of orange soda

There’s fruit punch, blue and red

There’s apple juice or lemonade

Or chocolate milk instead

And when we sit together

My grandma passes salt and butter

She says “There’s nothing better

Than watching movies with each other!”

Grandma’s house smells like good food

And I know when I go

That she’ll make us something great

Because she loves us so!
