Fox
Coming home from my nighttime walk
I saw a fox run across my yard
and into the darkness
What a sight to behold!
Animals who live amongst us
but not with us
Semi domesticated animals
We feed the birds and squirrels
by the big maple tree
at the end of our driveway
Leave them bird seed
and stale pretzels
and leftover popcorn
from the night before
that was left on the coffee table
overnight
The birds love it
They don’t know any better
They don’t know about fresh popcorn
Hot from the stovetop
Cooked in vegetable oil
Fried up nice and crispy
With a little salt
and a lot of butter
All they know is stale old popcorn
But they love it!
They really do
Each and every Saturday morning
after movie night
we send the birds a treat
And they come flying fast!
The squirrels love the pretzels
They’ll eat them up
In a jiffy
In a heartbeat
Even faster
Watch them come running
down the big old maple tree
300 years old
at least
Enormous
and gorgeous
Red
Orange
Yellow
in the fall
A hundred million kisses
sent up to the heavens
for sending us that big old maple tree
Right there
From 300 years ago
What a sight to behold!
Truly a sight!
That tree
With the poison ivy climbing up the sides
Watch out!
Squirrels don’t care
They come running for pretzels
Fast as can be
Fighting for them
Breaking them like wishbones
Make a wish!
More pretzels please!
I wonder what the fox came for
I wonder what we left out
that he sniffed
a long mile away
and came running
